AUTISM TESTING

Autism is the name used to define a "spectrum" of disorders, meaning that each individual differs in some aspects, but share some similarities. These differences affect how an individual person behaves, communicates, learns and interacts with others.

While there is not a medical test, like a blood test, to diagnose Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), there are a list of professional screening and diagnostic tools to help experienced medical professionals make a diagnosis. Symptoms of autism are classified into three areas: Social, Communication and Behavior. â€‹

Social symptoms commonly include: avoiding eye contact or building friendships, while communication symptoms include delayed speech or use of repetitive words or phrases. Lastly, behavioral symptoms can be described with heavy use of routines and rituals, repeated physical motions, and increased sensitivity to sounds, lights, textures, and/or tastes.

"It makes so much sense... I had always wondered if I was autistic, but knowing for sure feels really good. I'm really glad I got tested."

- Therapy Client, 2024

Benefits of pursing diagnosis:

While the symptoms of autism will begin to appear around the age of 3, it is common for autism to be recognized and tested for later in life - while the individual is an adolescent, teenager, or adult.

Detecting autism early can include many benefits. Allowing the opportunity for early intervention, studies show that individuals are able to enhance their developmental outcomes and improve adaptive skills. Additionally, early identification allows time for specialized interventions tailored specifically to the individual with autism - targeting social communication, language development, and overcoming moral challenges. â€‹

For many autistic adults, the diagnosis can be life-changing and profound. Prior to receiving the diagnosis, many individuals will struggle to understand why they feel, think, and communicate differently from those around them. This can lead to feelings of self-doubt, isolation, anxiety, and depression. Once diagnosed, autistic adults are able to build their self awareness, understand differences, and form a greater sense of identity. It can be liberating to finally understand why you have always felt different.
